Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

What is the pelvic floor?

It is a group of muscles that are located at the bottom of your pelvis.

What is the function of the pelvic floor?

  • Support your internal organs; bladder, uterus, & bowel

  • Support to the vagina and anal passages

  • Plays a large role in supporting the pelvis alongside the external pelvic and deep core muscles

How can the pelvic floor weaken?

  • Pregnancy - the increased load

  • Straining when opening your bowels (constipation)

  • Increased standing (e.g. working as a teacher, hairdresser...)

  • Chronic cough

Symptoms of pelvic floor weakness

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms please speak to one of our Women's Health Physiotherapists.

  • Incontinence: leaking of urine either during a specific activity, when moving or even at rest

  • Incontinence with strenuous activity

  • Heaviness in the vaginal area / under carriage

  • Discomfort in the vaginal area / under carriage

  • Loss of gas/ flatulence without control

  • Pelvic pain

***Note that these symptoms are common but not normal***
