WHAT IS TYPE 2 DIABETES ?
Diabetes is a problem for your body because blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. You might also have heard the term; hyperglycemia. Thirst, frequent urination, blurry vision, slow healing of cuts, are some of the symptoms of Diabetes.
Normally this is what happens :
- When we eat our body digests the food and breaks it down into glucose.
- The glucose is then absorbed by your digestive system and enters your blood.
For your body to be able to use the glucose as energy for your brain and muscles, insulin (a hormone produced by the pancreas) helps the glucose to move into your cells.The cell can use the glucose as fuel or stored it for later use. In diabetic (type 2) patients, however, insulin is not working properly. There are two reasons possible: Your body doesn’t make enough insulin and/or the insulin produce is not used effectively.
When the body is not using insulin well, the pancreas will try to compensate and make more. But at some point, the pancreas will get tired and won’t be able to make enough insulin to lower the sugar level in the blood. The sugar then remains in the blood and can cause damage to the eyes, the nerves and/or skin which can lead to complications such as kidney and heart disease, blindness, stroke and even loss of limbs.If you are overweight or obese, suffering from high blood pressure or abnormal cholesterol, if you are physically inactive or if you have diabetes in your family history you are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Take control! Healthy eating and exercise are the two most important tools that are under your control. Your doctor might also suggest to monitor your blood sugar and possibly prescribe diabetes medication or insulin therapy if necessary.
